The Dimitrije Bašičević Mangelos Award was established in 2002 by the Center for Contemporary Art in Belgrade and The Foundation for a Civil Society (FCS) in New York, as part of the Young Visual Artists Awards (YVAA) project with the idea of ​​establishing an annual award. provide a young artist from Serbia with a residency in America (first years in Sausalito, California, and then in New York).

The award is named after a significant artist, the founder of the conceptual practice, and art historian from the former Yugoslavia, Dimitrije Bašičević Mangelos.

Since 2006, the CONTEXT gallery and the art association DEZ ORG from Belgrade have been the new organizers of the Dimitrija Bašičević Mangelos Award.

The award consists of a six-week residency in New York, in the International Studio and Curatorial Program (ISCP), which is one of the most important programs for young artists today.

The program of the stay includes visits to numerous galleries, museums, as well as acquaintance with representatives of the New York art scene.
After returning from New York, a solo exhibition is organized for the awarded artist.

Each year, the jury, taking into account the votes of artists sent by e-mail, selects five to six finalists who then have an exhibition in the CONTEXT gallery. At the opening of the exhibition, the winner is officially announced.
