Public conference: 1968 AND NEW SOCIAL MOVEMENTS IN YUGOSLAVIA

2008 marked the fortieth anniversary of the revolutionary turmoil of 1968: the student movement and turbulent social movements signaled the intensification of the democratization of numerous societies, including the former Yugoslavia. Many of the hopes of a generation that was realistic and sought the impossible remained betrayed or unfulfilled, but without the 1968 movement and its influences, the world would not exist in its present form.

The aim of the project is to research the events of 1968 and the New Social Movements that emerged under their influence. What were the reasons for the revolutionary turmoil of 1968 and how did the world wave of rebellion pass through Yugoslavia? What political, cultural, ideological, and other consequences were left behind. How did new social movements in Yugoslavia emerge and develop during the 1970s and 1980s? What were the activities of the new social movements during and after the crisis and wars in Yugoslavia?

Among other things, the conference will seek answers to the following questions: is it possible to put the events of 1968 in a real historical context and realistically look at their achievements and influences on social movements in the former Yugoslavia? To what extent did the 1968 movement contribute to the democratization of Yugoslav society or perhaps even hinder the democratization process? Did the generations of artists, punks, feminists, and political marginals of the 1970s find inspiration in the 1968 movement, and in what way? How did social movements develop during the 1980s and 1990s? Where were the inspirations sought and where did the influences come from? What is the current situation in terms of new social movements, under what influences did they arise and move in their development? What are the perspectives of new social movements in Serbia and in the post-Yugoslav area?

The intention of the conference is to consider social movements in Yugoslavia through a series of presentations and discussions from the time of the student movement in 1968, inspired by Marx and Freud, Reich and anarchism, through Praxis philosophy and the influence of the Frankfurt School, neo-avant-garde and Black Wave, feminism and punk, New Wave and Free universities, to UJDI and workers ’strikes in socialism, student and peace movements of the 1990s, neo feminism and contemporary social movements with their dilemma between NGO professionalization and the return of guerrillas.
