Paula Haeni is a Swiss musician that is active in the fields of contemporary music and improvisation as a clarinet player. In 2025 she did an artistic residency in Belgrade and focused not only on solo music, but was strongly interested in collaborations with the local scene. She participated in several concerts and made new connections. One of those is in Novi Sad, where Ilia Belorukov has been based since 2022. He’s a Russian artist who’s using alto saxophone and modular synthesizer as his primary instruments. Both found a common ground immediately when talking about music. Later they arranged a couple of sessions in Novi Sad and developed a duo sound including bass clarinet with effect pedals and modular synthesizer. Their music began to grow from seeds of reductionism improvisation with twists from electroacoustic and noise contexts. Later on, Paula and Ilia added to the sound palette different kinds of textures and density of sound events is raised proportionally. Balancing between extended techniques and processing of the instrument, Paula is finding herself combining two diverse strategies of playing. Ilia is doing synthesizer alive not only with the sound itself, but with gestures that came from his instrumental background. Each touch is affecting the feedback inside of the synth's connections, each small turn of the knob and slide of the fader are changing the parameters drastically. Together musicians are placed in the context of careful listening to each other, while operating their tools, while making collaborative composing in real time.
