Hacker culture - history of possible alternatives of the future technologies

Participants in the conversation:
* Patrice Riemens: social geographer, free software spokesperson, and member of the Dutch hacker group Hippies from Hell
* Benjamin Mako Hill: programmer, free software and free culture pine, board member of the Free Software Foundation, and initiator of the One Laptop per Child project
* Marcell Mars: hacker and lemer
* Tomislav Medak: philosopher, mediologist, and fighter for free software and free culture

The conversation "Hacker culture - history of possible alternatives of the future technologies" will try to answer the question of what hacking is as a technological and social practice. Whether it is the study of closed technological devices, software work on creating free software, or breaking into the information system that manages processes in modern society, hacking always starts from the understanding that technologies are the control of social controls and that in a society dominated by technological knowledge on the functioning of technology and control over the technological development of the issue of political freedoms.

The conversation will focus on this hacking practice and culture throughout its history, the political position towards the economically determined development of technology and the formative role of technology in modern societies, social-organizational role in emerging distribution-collaborative forms of social production, attitude towards cultural representation, and cultural industry.

Visits are in small groups, gathering in the lobby of the Hotel Mediteraneo every full hour.

The exhibition Sistem.hack () deals with history, the broader social and artistic significance of ingenuity which opens closed technological systems as an organization of social controls.

The moment of excellence in programming is called a hack. The perfect hack is surprising, media attractive, lucid in the use of technology, witty, and non-violent. System.hack () is any hack that opens a closed system, open system conversion to permanent dynamic.

The system.hack () exhibition and accompanying catalog follow the links between moments of excellence in different areas of human production - excellence which in each case must provide an answer to two questions: 1) Which system is hacked? and 2) How is the system hacked, ie what is a specific hack in a particular work?

The exhibition space is not a gallery, but the interior of hotel rooms. The hotel room is the lowest common denominator of all living spaces in which visitors/readers normally reside. The hotel room also has a guidebook. The museum inscriptions, along with the exhibits, point to an examination in a book that tries to provide an answer to the questions posed by a particular work and its social context.

- Richard Stallman: GNU General Public License
- Michael Steil: Linux on Xbox
- unknown hacker: breaking digital security on a CD

Jonah Brucker-Cohen, Benjamin Mako Hill, Marcell Mars, Tomislav Medak, Ognjen Strpić, and McKenzie Vark write about the hacks in the catalog, which are given to every visitor of the exhibition.

Hacker culture - created in partnership with the Multimedia Institute from Zagreb, the Center for New Media_kuda.org from Novi Sad, REKS from Belgrade, Kiberpipe from Ljubljana, and Kontrapunkt from Skopje - is a project of the Clubture regional initiative.
