Lumpen Station
Its inclusive nature — and the fact that it is not gaze-oriented — allows diverse communities to gather, connect, and become more than mere users. Radio brings people together and fosters collective expression through all kinds of events and experiments.

Lumpen Station is a Swiss web radio based in Biel/Bienne dedicated to radio art and experimental sound practices. Conceived as both platform and laboratory, it explores sound as a medium for research, encounter, and collective experience. Lumpen Station is directed as a duo by artists Mathilde Marioni & Andrea Marioni.

Lumpen Station, founded in 2019 in Biel/Bienne (CH), is part of this living history. Conceived as a “sound extension of an art space,” it has operated nomadically since 2021. Strategies for making radio — from building a project and navigating between institutional and underground contexts, to maintaining a free spirit and hosting what we like to call “UNdisciplinary practices.”

From 2023 to 2025, they travelled through the Balkans, meeting people and connecting cultural scenes via radiophonic exchanges. This ongoing project called “Soundgate” has given rise to several radio-happenings, long distance collaborations and a fanzine.

In the fall of 2025, the founders of Lumpen station stayed in Novi Sad and then recorded several sessions with people gathered around kuda.org activities.

Brief introduction from the Fanzine:

“...Why go to the Balkans ? We would like to start with this question, which is often asked during our encounters with people in the region, but also back home by some friends. The answer would need a publication on its own, starting by going back to the ’90s when children from former Yugoslavia arrived in Swiss schools as refugees, describing some conflicts between Swiss people and newcomers from this Central European diaspora, and ending with the current situation. But to go straight to the point and from a Swiss perspective, ex-Yugoslav countries have somehow remained a blind spot as a destination within Europe for many years, especially regarding cultural exchanges — countries not yet sufficiently explored or present on the map. Since the first trip Andrea Marioni made in 2016 to the region, the situation has evolved every year...."
